Abstract

A 64 year old man came to us with and irregularly 4.2¡¿1.5cm sized warty lesion which had been existed for about ten years in the vermillion border of his lower lip. The biopsy-proved diagnosis was verrucous carcinoma. Deep lip shave was
performed
with
a 5mm safe margin, and a small amount of orbicularis oris muscle was included and resulted in a defect of almost four fifths of the entire lower lip vermillion. The flap from the end of the tongue was reflected dorsally and mobilized into the
area
of
the full thickness defect of the lower lip under general anesthesia. After 15days, the tongue flap was cut and insetted after trimming for the reconstruction of the defected vermillion border. The postoperative result was very excellent in view
of
esthetic and function. For three years after surgery, there is no evidence of recurrence. We found that tongue flap can retain both a sufficient buccal cavity and the contour of vermillion border, and it is a very useful alternative to other
local
flaps
for the vermilion defect.
